Shellworks: Reimagining nature's packaging

Founded by Insiya Jafferjee and Amir Afshar, Shellworks is working towards a future without relying on the overuse of petroleum. The company has an ever expanding range of materials and customizable packaging.

Shellworks discovered that only 9% of plastics are effectively recycled with 12% being burned and the remaining 79% polluting our environment. All the materials used at Shellworks perform like plastics, but don’t have the same negative effects at end of life.

The newest material known as Vivomer will degrade organically as it’s made with microorganisms found in marine and soil environments. This bacteria will see the microbes as food and consume it, ultimately leading to no micro plastics left behind!

Another innovative material created by Shellworks is Shellmer. It’s created using biopolymers extracted from seafood waste and is fully water soluble, meaning it can be dissolved under hot water.

Shellworks also feature natural seals and dyes along with actual products. The most notable from the product catalog is the compostable lipstick packaging, known as the Lippy. The Lippy is suitable for lipsticks and balms and is made with a singular piece of material. All of the products are customizable using natural dyes and even print changes.
