Pineapple 'Leather'

Ananas Anam has developed an innovative, natural and sustainable non-woven textile called Piñatex™ made from pineapple leaves and waste plant fibres. They are a bi-product of the pineapple harvest. No extra land, fertilizers, water, or pesticides are required. Pineapple leaves would normally be wasted. Turning them into a useable item creates an additional income for farmers. It's both durable and biodegradable. Pinatex also comes at a low cost. It was first discovered by Spanish designer and Ananas Anam founder Carmen Hijosa. Major companies such as Puma and Camper have already showed interest in this fascinating new 'leather' like material.
